Eirik K. Moen IUP - COSC380 FALL 2007 Tracking cell phones

Tracking cell phones Tracking people and objects What`s needed How Improve Accuracy Examples

Tracking people/OBJECTS Since the 70`s we have seen tracking devices in movies – then it was science fiction – but not today GPS gives accurate location, but requires an additional device (and need to be outdoors) The GSM network keeps track of your phone to be able to route your call to the right base station

What's needed The phone number to be tracked Maps Access to the Service Providers server

How The GSM networks polls the phone The data is analyzed The location data is shown on a map The phone responds to the poll

IMPROVE Accuracy Use more than one base stations to improve accuracy (triangulation) Use geographical data to calculate dead spots For locating objects use Radio Direction Finder to get accurate position
