The New and Improved Comparison/Contrast Essay ELAGSE8W1 – Students write arguments to support claims with clear and relevant evidence.

Your New Organizer Tell-Tale Heart Cask of Amontillado Your argument is that both short stories use the Gothic theme of appearance and reality (our example), but one of the stories uses the theme more effectively. How Both Use Gothic Theme Differences Differences

Your New Outline Introduction with thesis How both stories use a Gothic theme (show using text evidence) How “Tell-Tale” uses the theme How “Cask” uses the theme How the stories differ in the use of that theme Explain how the use of a Gothic theme is more effective in one story than another. Reason 1 Reason 2 Conclusion – how did the difference affect the quality of the story (and therefore, how does this difference prove your thesis)?

New 1st Draft Directions Make sure you have all of your notes and graphic organizers you used for these stories. Write a new first draft according to the instructions given to you last Thursday. You may use material from your old draft, but the new one must follow the outline given last Thursday. Expected length – around 300 words. You will peer review these drafts and revise them.
