THINK/FEEL

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QTie1j4H2g Look for the opinion words!

What do you think? 1890s text What she said: There is one kind of extravagance rapidly increasing in this country, which, in its effects on our purses and our habits, is one of the worst kinds of extravagance; I mean the rage for travelling, and for public amusements.

Opinions Vocabulary: Naïve Narrow Archaic (old) Unfairly pessimistic Shallow and unsupported with reason Indicative of ignorance and lack of understanding Disingenuous and fraudulent - fake

A4. A4. What do you think and feel about Lydia M. Child’s views about travelling? You should comment on:  what is said; (quotes)  how it is said. (techniques or key words used) You must refer to the text to support your comments [10]

A4. TASK: choose three key words that you think are shallow, archaic and narrow viewpoints. Evaluate critically – apt quotes (get yourself a strong opinion and pick apart good quotes to show it!) Convincing, well-selected examples techniques Make a clear, relevant overview (introduction) to sum up their views – Childs makes a philosophy for positive power to be useful… Engage and get personally involved. There is one kind of extravagance rapidly increasing in this country, which, in its effects on our purses and our habits, is one of the worst kinds of extravagance; I mean the rage for travelling, and for public amusements. The good old home habits of our ancestors are breaking up— it will be well if our virtue and our freedom do not follow them! Challenge: find a technique that is actually ironic and makes her look silly.

Model: Overall, Child creates a viewpoint that is shallow based on ”old” traditions and archaic ways of thinking. Child isn’t fair to people who might want to spend on travelling, “extravagance” seems like a strong emotive word that is ludicrous, because wanting to learn more about culture is a basic human nature and “rage” for travelling seems over-exaggerated and shallow-minded. Child’s views are closed with “good old home habits”, the words “good” and “old” are actually an oxymoron which is ironic because “old” is usually not linked to anything good, but out-of-date and the words “home” shows she never looks past her own walls “habits” shows she is cut-off from realities around her.

Child has an unfair view of working class Child has an unfair view of working class. “mechanics…take a peep and a peek at the opera house”. The verbs “peep and peek” are alliteration but shows her naïve, ignorant attitude that working-class men are childish and immature. I think this is unfair and an ignorant attitude to have.
