3.6 EQUATIONS WITH FRACTIONS AND DECIMALS Algebra concepts
objective Students will solve Multistep Equations containing fractions and decimals.
Clearing the Equation When an equation contains fractions or decimals, we can use multiplication to get rid of them
Clearing the Equation Fractions – multiply by Least Common Denominator (Use LCM SHEET)
Example 1 2 3 𝑥− 1 2 𝑥= 5 6 +2𝑥
Example 2 7 8 𝑥+ 3 4 = 1 2 𝑥+ 3 2
Example 3 5 6 𝑥+ 1 2 = 2 3 𝑥+4
Clearing the Equation Decimals – Count number of digits after decimal (use the highest one) 1 digit → Multiply by 10 2 digits → Multiply by 100 3 digits → Multiply by 1000
Example 4 16.3−7.2𝑦=−8.18
Example 5 26.45=4.2𝑟+1.25
Example 6 0.5𝑎+0.75𝑎+1.2=1.45
Try these 1.) 41.68=4.7−8.6𝑦 2.) 1 7 𝑧+ 3 14 = 5 14
