Ogden Trails Network Contest Landscapes

Agenda Demonstration on using oil pastels Practice in sketchbooks how to create texture in the middle ground Find an image Create background with chalk Spray Middle ground, pastel Foreground, acrylic paint Exit Pass

Project Expectations Foreground, middle ground and background Foreground – detail and brighter (acrylic paint) Middle ground – a little less detail and duller (oil pastel) Background – dullest(atmospheric perspective) and the least amount of detail(chalk) Ogden Trail Try your best, have fun! Due end of class Friday Enter into contest – free t-shirt and prizes, 1st place $100-!

Dividing a landscape There are 3 sections in a landscape. The background The middle ground The foreground Draw on your photograph now the horizon background line, horizon line, middle ground line and foreground line.

How to draw a middle ground The middle ground will be bolder so we will use oil pastels. This needs to end right at the line for the foreground or it will not look as good. This layer should show more detail than the background, but not as much as you will put into the foreground.

Making Marks Make marks with the tip of your oil pastel Make marks with the side Mix two colors Create a value scale with a paper towel Make a tint Make a shade Stipple Scumbling Feathering Dusting with a pallet knife

Create Middle ground Everyone will use their selected photo to create the middle ground of their art with oil pastels Once done you will than spray. Make sure your name is on the paper before you put it onto the drying rack.

Clean up! You should put all the oil pastels back into the containers. You need to use a wet paper towel and wash off your table. Make sure that you table is dry and clean and all supplies are put back in the middle of the table.

Exit Pass Were you able to finish your middle ground today? How are you using texture in your work? Next class we will complete the foreground with acrylic paint and turn in.
