Welcome to Back to School Night Functional Life Skills Ms. Byron and Ms. Kirsch Thomas Jefferson Middle School 1
WE ALL NEED FRIENDS It is through global intercultural communication that we come to create, understand, and transform culture and identity. Intercultural communication is communication between people with differing cultural identities. It was important that our students understand that we are one world, by exploring diversity, stereotypes, positive race relations, and respect. 2
Our FLS class focuses on friendship using our IB characteristics while participating in our academic curriculum. Our learning environment includes academic, social, and everyday life skills that provides a well-rounded experience. 3
A Safe Place to Learn We incorporate Maslow's pyramid (hierarchy) of needs to provide our students with a safe learning environment. 4
Cooperative Learning Each year our class reviews the Thomas Jefferson handbook regarding student conduct, and we agree that using the IB characteristics is key to building healthy and positive friendships. 5
IB Learner Profile Characteristics for FRIENDSHIPS: CARING We learn that being considerate of others is key to caring. 6
FRIENDS ARE: Open- Minded We learn how to accept other’s differing ideas, opinions, and input to accomplish our goals. 7
