Priorities for the Africa Region Side Event: GEOGLOWS and the Harmonization of GEO Water Activities Priorities for the Africa Region Rose Alabaster, Co-Chair GEOGLOWS Steering Committee

Basin Mapping & Vulnerability Assessments Water access (availability and quantity) and water quality - geospatial tools using EO DATA; What are the data policies? = is there a common legal framework For basin management? (laws, agreed action plans etc) =What are the existing international instruments governing basin level actions?

Climate Scenarios Climate scenarios of rainfall and their impact on water resource management and overall well-being of communities.

Behavioural awareness and Capacity Building on application of geospatial tools Targeted at all relevant stakeholders – to strengthen evidence based decision-making esp. Where in situ data lacks; What are the different levels of development and capacities in a given context? What is the relevance and capacity for local/sub-national application application?

Veracity of data Consistent set of rules for data management Is there suffiecient training on this for all actors? If monitoring sustainable development will be based on comparability of data – is there agreement on methods and formats for collecting data and credibility of the data’

Can we really have Open access to data? The SDG mperative to ``leave no one behind`` has not provided a framework for handling sensitive data nor the framework for engaging the private sector; However captures Human rights principles of inclusivity (non-discrimination); partcipation; accountability/transparency and sustainability; How do we ensure access to information as well as achieve the right to privacy?
