Aim: What were the motives behind European Imperialism?

Imperialism is the domination by one country of the political, economic, and/or cultural life of another country or region. Countries or regions controlled by another country are called colonies.

I. EUROPEAN IMPERIALISM (1870-1900) a. Political and economic control of one region or country by another. b. Nationalist spirit led to European countries wanting to expand and conquer new lands. 1. Scramble for new colonies.

BASED ON THIS ILLUSTRATION DESCRIBE SOME MOTIVES FOR IMPERIALISM

c. MOTIVES FOR IMPERIALISM 1. New technology (rifles, better medicines, telegraphs, and steamships) due to the Industrial Revolution made it possible to penetrate the interiors of Africa and Asia.

2. Industrialization of Europe and North America stimulated a demand for minerals, industrial crops, and stimulants (sugar, coffee, tea, and tobacco). 3. Conquered land demonstrated a nation’s power. 4. European countries wanted to keep a BALANCE OF POWER among themselves.

5. Many Europeans believed in Social Darwinism: Strongest/fittest should survive and flourish in society, while the weak and unfit should be allowed to die. belief that European societies were more successful because they were superior.

d. Forms of Imperialism Definition Examples Colony A country or a region governed by a foreign power. The 13 American colonies were ruled by England. Protectorate A country with its own internal government but under the control of a foreign power. Britain established a protectorate over the Niger River delta. Sphere of Influence An area in which a foreign power claims exclusive trading rights. China was a sphere of influence under U.S., & European Countries. Economic Imperialism Independent but less developed nations controlled by private business interests rather than by other governments. The Dole Fruit Company controlled pineapple trade in Hawaii.

Satire is a technique employed by writers to expose and criticize foolishness and corruption of an individual or a society by using humor, irony, exaggeration or ridicule. It intends to improve humanity by criticizing its follies. A writer in a satire uses fictional characters, which stand for real people, to expose and condemn their corruption. A writer may point a satire toward a person, a country or even the entire world. A "lightly proffered laurel" is a symbol that refers to a freely-given honor. (The ancient Greeks used to wear a crown of laurel leaves as a mark of distinction.)
