WHAT IS A LIBRARY A library can be considered a store – house of knowledge. In dictionaries the word “library” has been defined as a building or room containing a collection of books. A library gives a great service to the society .

IMPORTANCE TO POOR PEOPLE There are many people who love reading. But they can’t afford to buy books because the prices of books are very high. So when one becomes a member of a library, he can borrow valuable books.

IMPORTANCE TO POOR STUDENT Even those student who are best but are poor they can’t afford to buy all the books from market for their studies. In this case A public library is a place that is open to them .

LIBRARY PROVIDES CALM AND QUIET ENVIRONMENT. In a library atmosphere is very calm and disciplined and because of this students can gain more in less time . Nobody would check or disturb you.

THE ENVIRONMENT WITHIN THE LIBRARY ITSELF HIGHLY MOTIVATES A lot of people study at same time so in this way a library creates a environment of motivation.

A LIBRARY IS USEFUL FOR RURAL YOUTH TOO. A library is very useful for rural youths too. If they take to reading they will be able to refrain from evil habits such as :- loitering. gambling. drinking. fighting etc.

NOTICE-BOARD Most libraries have notice-board. They are used for writing important news of the day. A 'Thought for the day' is also written here. Titles of new books added to the library are also displayed on the notice-board to inform the students .

DISADVANTAGES OF USING THE LIBRARY Hours of Operation The library is open only a set number of hours. Time restrictions Checked-out materials must be returned.

HOW A LIBRARY CAN BE MANTAIN? 1 good librarian :- well-qualified ,cheerful and co-operative. 2 suggestions register. 3 comfortable neat and clean furniture. 4 atmosphere :- pin-drop silence

DO YOU KNOW THIS ? Library of congress is the largest library in the world Located in three buildings in Washington, D.C. There is actually 142 million books at the Library of Congress. The National Library of India in Calcutta ,is the largest library in India. Pioneer library has a rich stock of approx 19000 books on various subjects of management and IT along with 72 National and International Journals.

A STEP FROM TRADITIONAL LIBRARY TO E-LIBRARY E-library or digital library is a library where collection are stored in digital format and accessible by computer or other electronic device .

Requirement for digital libraries Audio visual: Color T.V., V.C.R., D.V.D., Sound box, Telephone etc. Computer: Server, P.C. with multimedia, U.PS. Etc Network: LAN, MAN, WAN, Internet etc. Printer: Laser printer, Dot matrix, Barcode printer, Digital graphic printer etc Scanner: H.P. Scan jet, flatbed, Sheet feeder, Drum scanner, Slide scanner, Microfilming scanner, Digital camera, Barcode scanner etc Storage devices: Optical storage device, CD-ROM, etc.

Resources of a digital library The resources of a digital library are those, which the computer can store, organized, transmit and display. On line resources: E-book, Internet E-mail Off line resources: C.D-ROM, etc

Why from traditional to digital libraries Information explosion . Searching problem in traditional libraries . Low cost of technology: The cost of maintaining a digital library is much lower than that of a traditional library. A traditional library must spend large sums of money paying for staff, book maintains, rent, and additional books.

Advantages of the Digital Library No physical boundary: The user of a digital library need not to go to the library physically, people from all over the world could gain access to the same information, as long as an Internet connection is available. Multiple accesses: The same resources can be used at the same time by a number of users . Round the clock availability: Digital libraries can be accessed at any time, 24 hours a day and 365 days of the year .etc

Disadvantages of the Digital Library Speed of access: - As more and more computer are connected to the Internet its speed of access reasonably decreasing. Initial cost is high: - The infrastructure cost of digital library i.e. the cost of hardware, software; leasing communication circuit is generally very high . Efficiency: - With the much larger volume of digital information, finding the right material for a specific task becomes increasingly difficult.

CONCLUSION A library plays a very vital role throughout the life . A library plays a very important role in promoting the progress of knowledge . A library is a treasure-house of knowledge. Particularly for students library is very important.
