TJTS505: Master's Thesis Seminar Lecture 6: Literature review Shuaiqiang wang Department of CS-IS, JYU

About this course Q: Could we have less presentations? A: No. The name of this course is "Master's Thesis Seminar”. It is NOT a common lecturing course. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, seminar means: a group of advanced students studying under a professor with each doing original research and all exchanging results through reports and discussions a(1):  a course of study pursued by a seminar (2):  an advanced or graduate course often featuring informality and discussion. b:  a scheduled meeting of a seminar or a room for such meetings a meeting for giving and discussing information

About this course In my first class I mentioned, the objectives of this course include Support the Master's study Practice writing research plans critical evaluation and analysis written and oral presentations of the study to the public.

About this course So, Presentation and discussion is the most important teaching methodology for the seminar courses. I don’t think you need much time to make your slides. Just copy and paste what you did. Focus on your thesis writing. During the classes, you need to present your concerns and issues if necessary when you present your work.

Literature analysis and writing Literature reviews should comprise the following elements: An overview of the subject, issue or theory under consideration, along with the objectives of the literature review Division of works under review into categories (e.g. those in support of a particular position, those against, and those offering alternative theses entirely) Explanation of how each work is similar to and how it varies from the others Conclusions as to which pieces are best considered in their argument, are most convincing of their opinions, and make the greatest contribution to the understanding and development of their area of research

LITERATURE REVIEW: structure Introduction: Brief introduction of general concepts and terminology Review and analysis of available literature: Current status of research viewpoints and approaches Identification of research gap Conclusion Conclude the review by focusing on key points and the identified research
