CW Journey’s End Saturday, 20 April 2019 Learning Outcomes To be able to engage with different readings To be able to make links between the portrayal of key characters in the play with those in “Toby’s Room”

Order the names in response to the following…. There is no right answer. Be prepared to argue the order you have chosen. The most sympathetically portrayed character The character with the most power The most realistic character The most compassionate character The bravest character

Re-read The Gun Scene with Stanhope and Hibbert Discuss and support or challenge the following readings of this section of the play…. The audience lose sympathy for Stanhope at this point, as his Sherriff depicts him as cruel and insensitive. Sherriff cannot appear to sympathise with Hibbert’s fear; he ensures that any sympathy created for the character is lost later in the play. It is not Hibbert who Stanhope is angry with – it is his recognition of the injustice of a war that can affect men in this way.

Perceptions of Heroism? Sympathetically Portrayed? Surviving Trauma? Perceptions of Heroism? Stanhope Toby Brooke Women? Alcohol? Attitude towards War? Role as an Officer? Sympathetically Portrayed? Treatment of Others? Kit Neville
