Berlin Airlift 1948 Stalin tried to force the Western Allies out of Berlin by sealing off every railroad and highway. Western powers responded by airlifting supplies to the West Berliners.

Berlin Wall 1961 Khrushchev, to stop people from fleeing eastern communist countries, had East Germany construct a wall around West Berlin.

Cuban Missile Crisis 1962 there was a nuclear standoff between the US (President Kennedy) and the USSR (Khrushchev). USSR was asked by Cuban leader Fidel Castro to put nuclear missiles on Cuba a mere 90 miles off the coast of Florida.

Korean War 1950 Communist forces in North Korea invaded South Korea. United Nations sent forces to repel the invasion. President Truman sent troops as part of a UN coalition. Still divided today.

Vietnam War 1963 US sends troops to help democratic South Vietnam fight off communist North Vietnam. A long and costly war. US pulls out by 1974. Vietnam is united and a communist country.

Cracks in Iron Curtain Poland -1980 Lech Walesa and dock workers formed a group called Solidarity, a workers organization with millions of members. The government outlawed the movement. Soviet Union sent in troops, put down the rebellion and restored a communist dictatorship. Later Vaclav Havel elected president. 1993 chose to split in to Czech Republic and Slovakia
