Day 6 – The Right Thing to Do Mother Night Day 6 – The Right Thing to Do

Journal 6 – An Escape “From Mexico City we would go exploring by automobile, would seek some secret village in which to spend the rest of our days. The plan was surely as charming a daydream as I had had in many a day. And it seemed not only possible but certain that I would write again” (Vonnegut 169). Where would you escape to and why?

Think – Ink – Pod – Share You will see a topic with some questions. Take a minute to think it over. Write out your thoughts. Talk it out with your pod. Share your ideas with the class. This will be collected.

Moustaches are for Gentlemen “The New York Daily News suggested that my biggest war crime was not killing myself like a gentleman. Presumably Hitler was a gentleman” (162). To this day, Hitler is seen as one of the worst people to ever hold power on this planet. What does Vonnegut want the reader to think when this statement is made? Do you think this sentiment is truth or sarcasm? What proof can you give either way?

Eichmann’s Excuse “ ‘You were simply a soldier, were you—…taking orders from higher-ups, like, soldiers around the world’” (165). “Eichmann cannot distinguish between right and wrong…My case is different” (166). Is this a fair thought for someone that has done what Eichmann did? Should all people (not only military personnel) be held responsible when following orders from superiors?

Hero or Villain “ ‘You would think that a man who’s spent as much time in the theater as I have would know when the proper time came for the hero to die—if he was to be a hero’” (185). Is Howard a hero or a villain?

Making Progress “I’ve heard a lot of bombs go off in my time, and they never impressed me much as a way to get things done” (189). What is Vonnegut trying to say with this quote? Do you think this is Vonnegut sharing some of his own experiences from the war?

ACT Writing Reflection Look at your most recent practice ACT writing test and the rubric attached. Find 5 things that you see that you can improve on when you take the next practice test. Revise some pieces to show positive strides in your writing method/process. This will be collected.
