JULIEN OPIE CERAMIC PORTRAIT

MAKE YOUR DESIGN http://www.artisancam.org.uk/flashapps/exploreselfportraits/ Using the portrait builder, create your own Opie style portrait.

CREATING YOUR TRANSFER Using a fine liner ink around the outer lines of your portrait with considered care and precision. Placing your image face-side down spray and rub the ink soaking it into the wet clay.

REVEALING YOUR TRANSFER Once you have allowed the ink to soak into the clay for 5-10 minutes peal back to reveal your transfer. Your prepared piece is now ready to work into.

CARVING OUT YOUR PORTRAIT Using a lino cutting tool, carefully work on the lines previously transferred onto your clay. Working on the details of the hair create flowing lines to give texture to the portrait.

APPLYING A FINISH TO THE PIECE Apply a finish by either staining, adding coloured slip or using a ceramic glaze to the tile. Use an appropriate stain or glaze to enhance your tiles ‘Opie like’ appearance. What do you like about your piece? How could it be improved? What techniques have you learnt?
