WISE - State of the art --- WISE - in the context of SEIS Beate Werner, Stefan Jensen
How does WISE look like today? What happened to Eionet-water? Where do we want to go from here?
WISE has been launched on March 22nd 2007… http://water.europa.eu
EEA - European water data centre - provider of thematic information and data http://www.eea.europa.eu/themes/water/
From ”stand-alone” EIONET water to WISE – SOE integrated with other water data New ways of communication! ... from tabular data to interactive maps ... New integrative viewing and assessment options (merging EU directives) First time supporting the themes Information on MyRiverbasin and competent authorities in MS European waterbodies at risk and / or highly modified Waterquality (nitrates, phosphates, Ammonium, BOD) in rivers and lakes Urban Waste water treatment European bathing water status Multiple spatial reference data (Corine Landcover, Image2000, Digital Elevation Models, GISCO, Teleatlas layers) Full access at http://www.eea.europa.eu/themes/water/
Information from Eionet in WISE ... Finland & Bothnian Bay River stations Gauging stations Lake stations Marine stations
... now merged with WFD (right) and urban waste water and bathingwater data (below) ...
... reaching from European level down to regional stations. (here: nitrate levels at rivers stations) Weser
How has Eionet water changed? monitoring site Reference to geography; catchment, WB (Art. 3+5) Reported once under Art. 8 due 22. March 2007 agreed: Nutrients, Chl a, HZ, in FW + GW In discussion: biolog. Elements, quantity, emissions, marine, HZ measured regularly (monthly, annually, biannually…)
Eionet-water in WFD implementation as WISE-SOE Parameters of the Eionet-Water priority data flow now endorsed in the WFD Common Implementation Strategy (CIS) as first set of WFD-SOE parameters to be reported under WISE The information reported under Art. 8 WFD will be used directly for the description and selection of the Eionet-water sites

WISE principles are SEIS principles cooperation of EU institutions and Member States Information is managed as close as possible to its source ---- Distributed WISE nodes Information is provided once and used for many purposes As of 2007 Reportnet is the WFD reporting tool Information accessible for clients to make comparisons at the appropriate geographical scale and information available to the public after due consideration of the appropriate level of aggregation, - (WISE map viewer displays of countries, river basins, catchment areas) European funding mechanisms should focus on delivering cost-effective analytical tools and services e.g. HarmoiCA (http://www.wise-rtd.info.)
WISE in the context of SEIS content Integrated assessments information from WISE-SOE, WFD, other directives and other environmental areas + spatial and (non-water) statistical information streamlining Reduced reporting burden WFD, SOE and data from other water related directives - parameter alignment - all flows through REPORTNET under WISE access distributed system output side provide shared water services for public and input side leave data at source
Towards development of distributed system Output Link to member states’ Water Information Systems to show regional assessments Need for common data features e.g. spatial data Input Data at source - harvest of data Ensures regular update of data from source Requires agreed meta-data and exchange formats
Important role for Eionet in the further WISE development Conceptual development from SOE perspective How do we share water related SOE- data and assessments in the Eionet Which are the priority assessments in WISE and how to display them – using best available data Co-operation throughout all water related legislations and processes With WFD – CIS With other water related directives and policies
