Meiosis The process of cell division in which male and female gametes are produced in order for sexual reproduction to take place
Fertilization -The union of two sex cells. -Sex Cells (reproductive cells) are HAPLOID. -HAPLOID cells contain only one set of chromosomes ( n) Only one copy of each gene. Male Gametes: Spermatozoa (testicles) Female Gametes: Eggs or Ova (Ovaries)
Parent cell divides twice - produces 4 daughter cells containing ½ the DNA of parent cell (n) - Join to make baby (2n: complete set of DNA)
Meiosis Diploid 2n Haploid n
Differences between Mitosis and Meiosis Parent cell diploid After interphase the Cell divides once: Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase Two daughter cells same genetic material as parents) Parent cell diploid But divides twice! Meiois I - same as mitosis - chromosome pairs separated (half) - end: each cell 23 chromosomes Meiosis II - chromosomes split into 2 - 4 haploid daughter cells
