APUNTES: CONTRACTIONS pág. 1/2 OBJETIVO: TLW form contractions in the target language. In order to form contractions in Spanish, remember the following: When ‘a’ or ‘de’ comes in front of the definte article ‘el’, you have to make a contraction. a+el= al (‘to the’. Use this in front of masculine singular nouns) de+el=del (‘of the/from the’. Use this in front of masculine singular nouns) You CANNOT say ‘ a el’ or ‘de el’ You CAN say ‘ a la’ , ‘de la’, a las, de las, de los Ejemplos: I am going to the supermarket. -Yo voy al supermercado -WHY?: Because supermarket is a masculine noun, a+el becomes the contraction ‘al’ APUNTES: CONTRACTIONS An L. The man’s wife is short and fat. -La esposa del hombre es baja y gorda. -WHY?: Because the word ‘man’ is a masculine noun, we cannot say ‘de el hombre’. Remember, ‘de’+’el’ becomes del.
