Presentation transcript:

Welcome! September 19th, 2017 Tuesday Do Now Get out your weekly Bell Ringer sheet and begin working on Tuesday’s assignment. Once the bell rings, you will have five minutes to guess the meaning of the word. Make sure you explain your thinking! Remember: Do Now's are INDEPENDENT and QUIET exercises. Thank you 

To abjure is to solemnly renounce or reject a belief, cause, or claim. Read the following sentence and guess the meaning of the word abjured based on the context. Gandhi abjured violence of any kind. To abjure is to solemnly renounce or reject a belief, cause, or claim. © Presto Plans

Modern Witch Hunt Story Today, we’re going to continue our Witch Hunt Stories! These will be due at the end of class tomorrow. Some things I’m noticing: Make sure your story actually has the “witch hunt” element. This means you need a group of people who are fearful/hysterical, and their fear should cause them to falsely accuse someone. The key word is falsely accuse – someone innocent needs to be accused for it to truly be a witch hunt!  Make sure you are showing versus telling. Instead of saying “Bob felt scared,” show us that he’s scared – say, “Bob’s face paled. His breathing came in ragged gasps.” Instead of saying “Mom told me how disappointed she was,” say “Mom sighed at me. ‘I’m so disappointed in you.’”
