Biodiversity description andthreats Introduction Biodiversity Description: The Kingdom of Thailand is a country that is very rich in biodiversity . This biodiversity stretches as far as the islands of Thailand ( Pi Pi Leh and Pi Pi doh). Thailand has a high level of biodiversity in plant species. Thailand is known for its lush forests that support the livelihoods of thousands of local communities (WWF , 2014). Thailand is home to a wide variety of ecosystems (WWF , 2014). . However the country is faced with many threats such as pollution , poaching , illegal timber harvesting and deforestation due to agriculture and poor management (WWF , 2014)

CURRENT PROTECTED AREAS Methods Prepare a map of the current Protected Areas Network. The prepared map should include a title, scale bar, North direction, a comprehensive legend and a fully descriptive caption. DO NOT DISTORT THE MAPS.

CONSERVATION TARGETS Percentage and Species penalty factors Methods Prepare a map of Conservation Targets: Identify at least TEN potential conservation targets that are suitable for a national conservation plan for your selected country in the context of their contribution to a global biodiversity conservation strategy. Targets need to be prepared as individual Boolean RASTER distribution maps. Please provide Species Penalty Factors for each Target. YOU WILL USE SEVERAL SLIDES TO SHOW these Conservation Targets. The folder contains zipped files that you select from or you can go to the IUCN Red data website to get other data (http://www.iucnredlist.org/ ). Systematic CONSERVATION planning Explaining Marxan Marxan is used to systematically conserve any regions and species that are under treat. Marxan identifies the potential priority area for inclusion in protected areas and network and provide other information to assist decision making in choosing which final conservation targets should be finally selected when creating a conservation management plan for Thailand. Methods Use this slide and simple drawings or flow diagrams to explain the core concepts of MARXAN. You should not use the IDRISI dialogue boxes. Ensure you use proper annotation and include a descriptive caption.

Systematic CONSERVATION planning Explaining Marxan Representation – Protected area sysetm should contain the full range of biodiversity , protected areas should represent all facets of biodiversity Complementary- protected area for conservation should be selected as complementary set , where each one complements feactures of others Adequacy- The goal of protected areas systems are designed not to melery capture biodiversity , but to promote its persistance and long term viability Efficiency- The agbility of the protected area system design process to deliever biodiversity objectives for least cost or fewest resources Spatial Compactness- A compact protected area system with a low edge : area ratio which has three advantages over fragmentated systems in more connection , giving a greater chance of persistance compared to fragmented systems Methods In summarized point form describe the parameter options you should select for the final RUN of the MARXAN analysis. You may use dialogue boxes to explain this section. (You do not need to run MARXAN as it would take too long to do the runs).

Expected Results Systematic CONSERVATION planning Explain using Diagrams the results you would expect to obtain from MARXAN. They do not need to be the actual results rather the form of the MARXAN outputs you would expect. You may use more than one slide to prepare this section.
