Fig 1 (A) Group A, autologous pericardium at 2 weeks after implantation. (B) Group B, gelatin sheet at 2 weeks after implantation. (C) Group C, L-lactic acid-ε-caprolactone copolymer at 2 weeks after implantation. (D) Group D, expanded-polytetraflurorethylene sheet at 2 weeks after implantation. Fig 2 (A) Group A, autologous pericardium at 4 weeks after implantation. (B) Group B, gelatin sheet at 4 weeks after implantation: no inflammatory reaction was observed. (C) Group C, L-lactic acid-ε-caprolactone copolymer at 4 weeks after implantation: piece of the L-C copolymer formed granulation tissue. (D) Group D, expanded-polytetrafluoroethylene (e-PTFE) sheet at 4 weeks after implantation: neutrophil infiltration is extensive around the e-PTFE seat. (C) Group C, L-lactic acid-ε-caprolactone copolymer at 12 weeks after implantation. (D) Group D, expanded-polytetrafluoroethylene sheet at 12 weeks after implantation. Fig 4 (A) Group A, autologous pericardium at 24 weeks after implantation. (B) Group B, gelatin sheet at 24 weeks after implantation: at the site of the remaining gelatin sheet, it has a light inflammatory reaction. (C) Group C, L-lactic acid-ε-caprolactone copolymer at 24 weeks after implantation: the copolymer sheet was almost replaced by a thin layer of fibrous connective tissue with some amount of granulation tissue. (D) Group D, the expanded-polytetrafluoroethylene (e-PTFE) sheet at 24 weeks after implantation: the e-PTFE sheet consisted of dense connective tissue. Fig 5 Immunostaining findings. In the replaced tissue sections in groups B and C after 24 weeks, a layer of the cells stained for cytokeratin and is likely mesothelium. (Left) Group B, 24 weeks (original magnification, ×200). (Right) Group C, 24 weeks (original magnification, ×200).
