HF Adherence measures Researchers uses beads in a glass (same color and number as ARVs prescribed), and asks users to estimate by pouring into a second class the total number pills actually consumed in the past month (researcher counts missed beads unobtrusively). Researcher probes for each drug how many times user missed a dose in past week. Health worker conducts a pill count for each ARV for past month Please note that these measures can be combined with probing on missed drugs and why etc

Composite measure For each prescribed ARV calculate Percentage beads/pills taken as estimated by user/total beads/pills prescribed for the month Percentage of pills reportedly taken/percentage pill prescribed one week Percentage pills taken as estimated by pill count/total pills prescribed in one month Composite measure is average of all percentages calculated – can be 3,6 or 9 percentages depending on number of different ARVs taken

HF measures for patient adherence One composite measure for adherence level of each patient measured in Health Facility -- analyzed as numerical variable Categorize each patient: High adherer is 90% and above, moderate adherer is 70 percent and above but less than 90%, and low adherer is below 70% - analyzed as categorical variable – correlations.

Home interview adherence Open discussion on experiences, effects, problems in taking etc with each of ARVs kept at home and used by patient with skilled and empathetic interviewer (qualitative), followed by 48 hours self-report, probing specifically for 3 dimensions, missed doses, timing and dietary practices (where relevant) for each kind of ARV that the patient uses. Diary should be interviewee friendly – using visuals for night and day.

2 day recall measures For each prescribed ARV calculate Percentage pills actually taken/total pills prescribed for past 48 hours. Percentage pills taken within two hours of prescribed time/total pills prescribed for 48 hours. Percentage of pills taken according to dietary prescription/total number of pills with dietary requirement for past 48 hours. Calculate an average for each dimension for all prescribed ARVs
