In our group study we read and researched the press in 8 wars Press during the Wars In our group study we read and researched the press in 8 wars Civil war World war 1 World war 2 Korean war Vietnam War Grenada conflict Gulf war War on terrorism

Civil War In the Civil war 1860’s reporters were well regulated by the military, just in case they were spies. The demand for newspapers increased, the public wanted to know what was happening in the war. Although photography was invented 20 years before the civil war it played a big role in the war. Catching pictures from the battle field (not too close). Cameras were not easy to carry, they had wagons to carry their heavy equipment. Thanks to the electric telegraph, they were able to receive reports from long distance.

World War 1 World War one battle of 1918 during this war The CPI Committee on public information was controlling the media during this war. In this war an act called the Espionage act was passed making false reports punishable. The inverted pyramid was a strategy reporters used, in releasing the most important information, then the least important. Although they did use propaganda to build international support and give the enemy a bad image to get people on their side. Atrocity propaganda are untrue stories

World War 2 World war 2 1940’s The CPI was gone, Another censorship took its place “the office of censorship” Office of war information, It was what approved or reject the news Black newspaper during WW2, There were 2 black major newspapers, NY Amsterdam, and Chicago defender, Who supported the war for equality and integration. Radio was important because they would send reports back to the U.S. Soldiers of the press were reporters of the battlefield During this war their were 3 main ways people followed the news, radio broadcast, newspapers and newsreels.

Korean War Korean war 1950’s During this war the military had to approve what was released to the public just as the past Civil war ww1 and ww2. During this war Television and footage was important. It was cheaper to buy films than to have a stage crew in the battle, news. One good source that the U.S. had for footage was the U.S. army they had photographers and access to frontline. During this war T.V. relied on newsreel companies The U.S. build war time crews by hiring photographers away from newsreels companies.

Vietnam War Vietnam war 1960’s During the Vietnam war the press was freer. Technology had advanced so much the military was having trouble controlling the news. On January 31, 1968 the North Vietnamese and communist Viet cong forces attacked more than 100 cities in South Vietnam. The press kept saying it was a victory for the communist which mislead as a triumph for communist because of the many deaths they caused. The communist captured cities only to be attacked back by the U.S. And S Vietnam. The plan was to stop the rebellion among the South Vietnamese population and encourage the United States to back off T.V. was the biggest media used

Grenada conflict Grenada conflict 1980’s a small island with American students feared for their lives from the Cubans, President Ronald Reagen decided to fight back to Cubans. The press was allowed to investigate in the small island after the invasion. There was about 1000 students there. 800 of them were American. The 2 major assets were strategic landing strip and medical school

Gulf War Gulf war 1990’s George Bush was cautious if this war since the grenada conflict. There were reporters in Baghdad reporting back to the U.S. Ted Turner created the CNN channel

War on terrorism War on terrorism early 2000’s september 11 , 2001 terrorists hijacked plane and crashed the twin towers. Reporters were discouraged to talk to arrested middle easterners because of fear they might be associated with terrorists. The news gave day to day news after bush associated Hussein with terrorism.
