Submission Title: IEEE 802.15 Potential TG3b MAC Project 12Sept2003 Project: IEEE P802.15 Working Group for Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs) Submission Title: IEEE 802.15 Potential TG3b MAC Project Date Submitted: Tuesday, September 12, 2003 Source: John Barr and Jim Allen Company: Motorola & Appairent Address: 1303 E. Algonquin Road, Schaumburg, IL 60196 USA Voice: 847.576.8706, FAX: 847-576-6758, E-Mail: john.barr@motorola.com Re: Abstract: Working document to collect suggestions for forming a new study group to investigate improvements to the current TG3 MAC Purpose: Prepared to collect suggestions for improvements to the current TG3 MAC not related to supporting new PHYs. Notice: This document has been prepared to assist the IEEE P802.15. It is offered as a basis for discussion and is not binding on the contributing individual(s) or organization(s). The material in this document is subject to change in form and content after further study. The contributor(s) reserve(s) the right to add, amend or withdraw material contained herein. Release: The contributor acknowledges and accepts that these viewgraphs becomes the property of IEEE and may be made publicly available by P802.15. John R. Barr (Motorola)

TG3a PAR The PAR for TG3a states: 12Sept2003 TG3a PAR The PAR for TG3a states: This project will define an alternative PHY clause for a higher data rate amendment to standard 802.15.3. The intent of this project is to provide a standard for a low complexity, low cost, low power consumption alternate PHY for 802.15.3 (comparable to the goals for 802.15.3). The data rate will be high enough, 110 Mb/s or more (see 18a), to satisfy an evolutionary set of consumer multi-media industry needs for WPAN communications. The project will address the requirements to support multimedia data types in multiple compliant co-located systems and also coexistence (18b). John R. Barr (Motorola)

TG3a Technical Requirements 12Sept2003 TG3a Technical Requirements Supplements to TG3 Functionality: It is envisioned that the alt-PHY project will allow supplements to 802.15.3. In addition to the PHY itself, the project may include MAC functionality necessary to support the selected PHY. It is required that the alt-PHY operate with the 802.15.3 MAC without fundamental change in operation. It is also required that any enhancements or modifications are enabled by reference to alt-PHY specific PIB parameters. As an example, from the project request, document 01/532r0 (alt-PHY study group proposal), location awareness is considered as a possible feature of certain alt-PHY technologies and is an example of supplemental MAC functionality. Such a provision may be supported by the PHY PIB parameters in the proposed 802.15.3 standard MAC or via supplemental MAC capabilities provided by the alt-PHY project. John R. Barr (Motorola)

Some Comments about Changes 12Sept2003 Some Comments about Changes Channel time allocation not optimized for MPEG-2 variable bit rate streams MAC support for Mesh networks MAC too complicated for simple video applications Ranging/location/identity John R. Barr (Motorola)

Most of these changes require new PAR 12Sept2003 Most of these changes require new PAR Not required to support new PHY Apply to current 802.15.3 2.4 GHz PHY as well as UWB PHY Would apply to any new PHY (e.g., mmW or 5 GHz) adopted by 802.15 WG. John R. Barr (Motorola)

Two Sessions to Hear Suggestions 12Sept2003 Two Sessions to Hear Suggestions Wednesday 1PM and 3:30 PM TG3 sessions Requested interest in participation: Mitsihiro Suzuki – Sony Jerome Tjia – Philips Pekka Ranta – Nokia Please see Jim Allen or John Barr to get added to the presentation list. John R. Barr (Motorola)

12Sept2003 Next Steps This document will be updated to track all presentations suggested improvements. If sufficient interest is found, group may recommend formation of TG3b study group to update TG3 MAC. John R. Barr (Motorola)
