[ 7.6 ] Poverty and Income Distribution Learning Objectives Define who is poor, according to government standards. Describe the causes of poverty. Analyze the distribution of income in the United States. Analyze the costs and benefits of U.S. economic policy related to the goal of equity.

What Causes Poverty? What are the three largest employment sectors for the working poor?

Household Income The estimated median household income in the United States between 2008 and 2012 was $53,046, which means that half the households earned more than this amount and half earned less. This figure tells only part of the income story. To fully understand poverty in this country, you also need to understand income distribution, or how the nation’s total income is distributed among its population.
