Help String an Orphan’s Life Together PER. 2 FREIDENFELT By ASHLESHA MISHRA Help String an Orphan’s Life Together

What is my project My infographic…

Why did I pick this topic? Last year, I was a student of Mrs. Murphy’s Advanced Humanities class. I was also assigned to do the young wonders project, and my topic was to give orphanages a way to access education for free so that they don’t have to spend massive amounts of money on curriculums. This year, I wanted to continue this idea for my courage project. I had also learned how to make terracotta jewelry over the summer. Therefore, I decided to make a different kind of earring, silk thread earrings, and sell them at a cultural event to fundraise.

I originate from a place in India called Odisha I originate from a place in India called Odisha. Here, in the USA, I am training under Guru. Dr. Ratna Roy, Evergreen Collage Professor, for learning the traditional classical dance style from there, Odissi. I am an international dancer and recently performed in the government festival in India. In the summer, thirteen young girls came here to perform Odissi. I got an opportunity to meet, and see their dances up close. These young girls were all from an orphanage called Adruta Children Home. This inspired me to think about all those who don’t have parents and how their lives would be. I decided to show courage by learning a skill, and utilizing it to fundraise for this orphanage to be able to continue giving orphans the lives they deserve. My inspiration

Research There are about 7.5 billion people on Earth. Out of the 7.5 billion, it is estimated that about 153 million children worldwide are orphans. Lucky orphans make their way to orphanages that support and value their life. Other’s face much difficulty and suffer many hardships. Worldwide, there are around 168 million children who are child laborers. These orphans are also part of the 263 million children who do not go to school, and some also live in poverty. In 2017, there were about 15,000 deaths every day of children under the age of five. Causes of this include pneumonia, diarrhea and malaria. Roughly 45% of these child deaths are linked to malnutrition. When the needs for these orphans are not met to give their life a basis, their lives end up here and they have no way to get pulled out of it if they can’t find an orphanage (because they are illiterate, sick, etc.)

How do most orphanages function and affect children? Being separated from one’s birth family is a harrowing experience. After research, scientists have now confirmed that this remains true for infants, who can experience traumatic effects from separation for the first multiple years of their life. There is no question that compared to the care provided to a child living on the street, orphanages do a much better job to make children feel accepted in society, for their true identity, and for their potential capability. They assure the child that someone cares for them and will always be there, they will have someone to cry on if something goes wrong, and will have someone to find if they ever lose their way. Orphanages can change the lives of many children and help the be successful in life.

How I utilized my skill To use the skill that I learned, making silk thread earrings, I made eight pairs of earrings, from which four earrings were made out of silk thread. We had a community cultural event where I put those eight earrings for sale. In the end, my total earning was $56.00. Since I decided to donate ALL the money to an orphanage in India (Adruta Children Home), that allowed me to donate a total of 3784.20 rupees.
