Statement of objectives Today we will analyze behavioral and environmental factors that contribute to chronic diseases. By the end of the lesson, you should be able to Identify these factors and be able to make the appropriate decision to avoid unhealthy choices. Identify the personal choices that impact your likelihood to develop a chronic disease. Manage your own behavior to reduce risks for chronic diseases

Chronic Diseases What is a chronic disease? Is a disease that lasts over a prolonged period of time Generally cannot be prevented by vaccines or cured by medicine Long lasting with it’s effects and can lead to death Can you name any chronic diseases? Cancer, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, bronchitis, emphysema, stoke

Chronic Diseases Majority of chronic diseases, which can lead to death, are caused by participation in relatively few health risk behaviors. Four adjustable risk behaviors account for much of the illness, suffering cost, and early death related to chronic diseases Lack of physical activity Poor nutrition Tobacco use Excessive alcohol consumption

Lifestyle Has the greatest impact on one’s health Decisions a person makes, from the clothes they wear, their physical activity, the foods they eat and how they manage stress all make up lifestyle. Many of these choices have substantial impact on the likelihood of that person developing a chronic disease Reducing the risks for these leading causes of death is done by improving or eliminating the risk factors that cause them.

Health Determinants Each partner pair will receive a different health problem. Decide which health determinant has the most influence on the assigned health problem List on the back side of your index card WHY you think your problem is associated most with that determinant. If your notecard has two categories, decide which determinant has the MOST influence. Tape your card below the appropriate sign. Be prepared to share with the class your decision.

Example STDs Environment, Heredity, Individual Choice (Lifestyle) Lifestyle because ??

Chronic Disease Project You will become an expert on a chronic disease The goal of this assignment is to educate the class on the chronic disease by answering the following questions: *Hint* Use your guided notes for reference What is the chronic disease? Are there different types of the disease? How is it treated? Are there symptoms? Behavioral factors? Environmental factors? Ways to prevent this disease? Next, create a presentation to educate the class- example: power point, poster, PSA video) Lastly, develop a campaign awareness in your school to reduce the risks for your chronic disease (how can you spread awareness in your school?) You will only need to present your campaign outlines

List of Chronic Diseases Talk amongst your group. When you decide on a disease, come tell me. First come first pick! Asthma Arthritis Cancer- Skin Cancer Cancer- Lung Cancer Cardiovascular disease Osteoporosis Bronchitis Emphysema Chronic Kidney Disease Diabetes Liver Disease
