Big ceremony/ celebration in honor of important event            - ex: birth, puberty, marriage, death, transfer of inheritance Community event, everyone participated Chief was main host but only administrator            - recognized everyone, not just chief                       - everyone helped out Celebrated to honor special people/ visitors Different types (next slide) What Is a Potlatch?

Different Types of Potlatches - Face saving potlatches -took place after public indignity involving person of high rank. (Ex: tripped\fell, was shown to inferior seat, etc.) - small gift\brief speech helped restore dignity - if insulted/ill will bigger potlatch happened - Rescue and ransom potlatches - for tribal members who were freed/recaptured - after period of war amongst other nations - fate of slaves were often decided - some win freedom others face death - Transfer of title potlatches - giving new clan title, crest or high status - includes announcement of origin/how title was acquired Different Types of Potlatches jwhj

Effect On Society and Economy Gave gifts to important members of society          - showed social status          - ex: cedar canoes + carvings,  furs, etc. People traded with each other          - developed friendships/ disagreements between each other Effect On Society and Economy
