Unit: Water and the Atmosphere Lesson 3: Layers of the Atmosphere Essential Questions: 1.) What are the four main layers of the atmosphere? 2.) What are the characteristics of the atmosphere’s layers?
Troposphere Altitude: About 0-12 km Temperature: The temperature decreases. Observations: Most clouds occur here. Earth’s weather occurs here.
Stratosphere Altitude: About 12-50 km Temperature: The lower stratosphere is cold. Observations: Middle portion has ozone layer; filters out UV light; warmer than lower part.
Mesosphere Altitude: 50-80 km Temperature: -90 degrees Celsius Observations: Much colder than the stratosphere; protects Earth from meteoroids.
Thermosphere Altitude: Above 80 km Temperature: The temperature rises. Observations: Two layers: ionosphere (lower) and exosphere (outer)
