Layers of the Atmosphere. First Layer  Scientists divide the atmosphere into four main layers based on the changes in temperature.  The Troposphere.

THE EARTH’S ATMOSPHERE: Atmospheric Layers
Layers of Earth’s atmosphere. How was the atmosphere formed? Atmosphere has changed (evolved) over time. Gases are held near the surface by gravity. Earth’s.
Troposphere About 75-80% of the atmosphere’s mass Rises to about 20km or about 7.5 miles Air is warmest at the bottom and gets colder as you move.
Layers of the Atmosphere Layer NameAltitude (km) Temperature change with altitude.
Directions: Choose the correct layer of the atmosphere. Identify the layer that the red star marks.

Presentation transcript:

Unit: Water and the Atmosphere Lesson 3: Layers of the Atmosphere Essential Questions: 1.) What are the four main layers of the atmosphere? 2.) What are the characteristics of the atmosphere’s layers?

Troposphere Altitude: About 0-12 km Temperature: The temperature decreases. Observations: Most clouds occur here. Earth’s weather occurs here.

Stratosphere Altitude: About 12-50 km Temperature: The lower stratosphere is cold. Observations: Middle portion has ozone layer; filters out UV light; warmer than lower part.

Mesosphere Altitude: 50-80 km Temperature: -90 degrees Celsius Observations: Much colder than the stratosphere; protects Earth from meteoroids.

Thermosphere Altitude: Above 80 km Temperature: The temperature rises. Observations: Two layers: ionosphere (lower) and exosphere (outer)
