Cars

Here is a fancy black limousine,

but this is an old broken-down black car.

You can buy cars in all different colors. Red,

blue,

black,

white,

grey,

and tan are most common.

But sometimes, people drive cars with brighter colors, like orange,

green,

yellow,

or even pink!

People drive cars on highways,

through city streets,

on neighborhood streets,

in driveways,

in parking lots,

and when they want to get away, they drive out into the country.

What do people use cars for? To go places—to work,

shopping,

to the library,

to the movie theater,

or just out in the country.

There are lots of different car types:

compact two-door,

four-door sedan,

fancy luxury car,

sports car,

and convertible.

There are other passenger vehicles that aren’t cars, like pick-up trucks,

which have “beds” in the back,

minivans,

regular vans,

SUVs (sports utility vehicles),

and jeeps.

Lots of boys and men love fancy sports cars,

so they are made into Hot Wheels.

But most people drive cheap sedans like the Toyota Corolla,

or a two-door coupe like the Honda Civic.

People in Europe drive some very tiny cars.

People used to drive really big cars like this 1959 Chrysler Imperial,

but now, if somebody wants a big car, they just get an SUV, like this Ford Explorer.

Cars are sometimes called automobiles. That means they go by themselves.

Before there were cars, people used horses and carts to move things.

Here is an automobile factory. They make cars in this huge building.

When they build cars, they put them in a line—an assembly line.

Here’s just the frames, the skeletons, of some cars.

These workers are putting engines into new cars.

And here are some finished cars! Ready for somebody to drive them!

Many different companies make cars Many different companies make cars. In the United States, there is Ford,

Chrysler,

and GM (or General Motors).

Japan makes lots of cars,

like Toyota,

Honda,

and Nissan.

Europe makes a lot of cars too,

like Volkswagen in Germany,

BMW in Germany,

and Volvo in Sweden.

You buy a new car from a car dealership.

Cars start out brand new,

but after a few years, they might get some dents

and scratches.

Here is a used car, it’s rather old.

After many years, cars get rusty,

or they get hurt in accidents,

so they have to be put in a junkyard. Good-bye, old car!
