Overview Guiding principles concerning prayer Types of prayer Preparation for leading prayer summary

Guiding principles concerning prayer Prayer and worship often used interchangeably Lords prayer as an example – adoration, submission, confession, petition, dedication Every prayer should have a specific purpose Should have good form Addressed to god Delivery in a clear voice Public prayers should not be to long

Guiding principles cont… Planning is essential if prayers are to be effective in leading people into worship All prayer leaders should be notified prior – no two prayer should be the same All public prayers should represent the entire audience prayers should not sermonize

Types of prayer The call to prayer – “please join me in prayer” The invocation – often called a collect – should focus more on god than the people Pastoral prayer – Adoration and thanksgiving of god Confession of sins Petition for blessings Intercession for those beyond the congregation Climax is submission to the will of god Conclude with an ascription to the godhead

Types of prayer cont… The silent prayer – The bidding prayer – leader may ask the congregation to take a moment of meditative prayer Complete silence is preferred The bidding prayer – Ask the congregation for those whom need prayers – pray for them one by one The litany – psalm 123:3 Prayer before the offering – dedication of gifts The benediction - should compile the attitudes of the worship service – wrap up

Preparation for leading prayer Genuine prayer that links humanity with the purpose of god deserves preparation Pray in private – no person is prepared to lead others in prayer if they have not worshipped god in private Consider the needs – the content is more important than the technique Study the prayers of the scriptures Study other prayers Outline and write out prayers

Preparation cont… Memorize portions of prayer – intro phrases Depend on the Holy Spirit – when prayers are planned, the Holy Spirit has more to work with Connect the prayer to its surrounding elements – be aware of what was said, sung, or taught Cliché – overuse of god or father, common lines, etc…

Summary Avoid reading scripture or sharing a thought prior to prayer “Please join me in prayer” Connect the prayer with surrounding elements Preparation is needed so that the Holy Spirit may have something to draw on Avoid cliches Each prayer should have a specific purpose Address god rather than talking about god Deliver prayer in clear voice
