Aim: How do we analyze position-time or Displacement-time graphs?

Position-time graph We use position-time graphs to explain how an object is displaced through time. What would a position-time graph look like for the car above?

Position time graph –Object moving at constant velocity What is the physical significance of the slope of this position-time graph? Remember that slope = rise/run

Meaning of SLOPE OF A D-T GRAPH The slope of a displacement time graph represents the velocity.

Position-Time graph-object accelerating (speeding up) What is the average velocity of this interval from 0-5s? Is the velocity constant? How can you tell?

SHAPE OF GRAPHS AND THEIR MEANING Straight line = constant velocity Curved line = changing velocity Constant slope implies constant velocity Changing slope implies changing velocity

Instantaneous velocity At any point on a position-time graph, the line drawn tangent to the curve at that point represents the instantaneous velocity. The slope of the tangent line at that point is equal to the instantaneous velocity.
