Presentation transcript:

Huntsville Police School Resource Officer Unit Summer Youth Camp Program Police Officers in Huntsville City Schools started in 1995 Continuing with a Federal Grant, HPD Officers were assigned in the high schools After the Federal Grant ran its course for 3 years, more officers were picked and assigned in not only high schools but also middles schools throughout the district

In 1997 School Youth Officers (at that time) began a week long summer camp that rewarded students throughout the school district that displayed what a student should be doing and not just a straight A student Funds generated for this endeavor came from several public entities who embodied what we were achieving with the students; it came as donated drinks, snacks and t shirts for the students

Officers then conducted short classes in the week long camp which consisted of bullying, nutrition, staying healthy, self-esteem and building a rapport with the officers Team building with the various students from around the district was always in the agenda to allow students to network with kids they have just met Each day centered around a theme of getting along with others and socializing skills with a positive note Days were usually spent making PB&J sandwiches for the students

Present Day Summer Camp Students are sent an application in the elementary schools for their pick on which students they would like to attend this rewarding camp experience with officers Funds now used come from the Madison County Delegates who applaud the efforts of HPD School Resource Officers (SRO) and would like to see it continue

Funding from the Madison County Delegates allow trips to Cathedral Caverns and Monte Sano Park, where Huntsville City Green Team allows student to give back and pick up trash in the park and help beautify the area Now through generous donations from entities like Papa Johns’, Frito Lay, Wal-Mart, Sam's Club and so many others making PB&J sandwiches seems so far in the past
