Maxine Hong Kingston b.1940 (75) ““Perhaps women were once so dangerous they had to have their feet bound.” By Roohi Khan

Kingston’s childhood She was born in Stockton, California, to Chinese immigrant parents. Her father was a school teacher and poet in china. Her mother was a doctor. In America, her father worked at gambling and laundry. Her mother raised 6 children. She was the eldest one to born in America.

Personal life She got married in 1962 to Earll Kingston She met her husband at university of California, Berkley. They had a son in 1964.

Education and Work She attended university of California, Berkley and received full scholarship. B.A in English After graduation, both Maxine and her husband taught at Sunset high school. Then they moved to Hawaii and taught for 10 years. She’s a feminist, anti war activist and a journalist. She was arrested in 2003 for participating in an antiwar protest

Work as a writer She published her first book woman warrior; Memoirs of a girlhood among Ghosts in 1976. Her book is about assimilation, conflicts Chinese American face and gender roles It’s based on myths, folk tales and her experience. She tried to mediate between past and present. Other famous writing includes China Men, The Fifth Book of Peace

Work as a Writer Her father annotated both of her books China Men and Woman Warrior Another of her famous book is Trip Master Monkey, about a young man trying to find home in America. She uses realism, magic and humor She also published poems, articles and stories She was inspired by Walt Whitman, William Carlos Williams and Virginia Wolf

Criticism Although her books were a huge success she received criticism from Chinese writers Frank Chin a Chinese American writer said that she created a fake Chinese American Culture.
