What do we know? How do we transport people and goods today? How long does it take to travel across the city? The state? The country? How long to get across the Atlantic? How do we farm today? Do you know anything about farming? What is the process? How do we communicate today? How long does it take to get a letter across the country? A phone call? An email? A text message? How do we make clothing today? What is the process? (from plant to your back)

Now think of these things during colonial times. Transportation: Communication: Clothing making: Farming:

Transportation Revolution The National Road Funded by the federal gov’t From Maryland to Ohio River

Transportation Revolution The Steamboat Robert Fulton move quickly upstream Cutting the trip up the Mississippi from 4 months to 20 days then to 6 days Opened up great potential of the Mississippi Helped transatlantic travel (50 days to cross the Atlantic to 10 days)

Transportation Revolution The Erie Canal across New York State (Lake Erie to Hudson River) Lowered transportation costs ($100 over land to $4 on canal) Helped New York City to become the nation’s greatest commercial center Increase the price of farmland in the Great Lakes region

Transportation Revolution Railroads 1st trains pulled by horses Steam engine increased speed Cost less than canals (brought an end to canals) By canal the trip from NYC to Detroit was 28 days, by train it was 2!!!

Transportation Revolution What did the transportation developments that occurred during this time period have in common? In what part of the country were most of the railroads located in the mid-1800s? How did canals and railroads affect the way that people in different states interacted? Why do you think this was the case?

Industrial Revolution What do you think of when you see / hear / read the phrase ‘industrial revolution’?

Industrial Revolution Samuel Slater Brought textile mill technology to the US Mills worked with the family system  everyone in the family works in the mill

Industrial Revolution Francis Cabot Lowell Centralized factory work  all parts of the manufacturing process occurs in the same location Employed only single women

Industrial Revolution Eli Whitney Interchangeable parts = ______________ _________________ _________________ _______________

Agricultural Innovations The steel plow – John Deere Industrial Revolution Agricultural Innovations The steel plow – John Deere The mechanical reaper – Cyrus McCormick

Message could be delivered almost instantly Industrial Revolution Samuel F. B. Morse Electric telegraph Morse code Message could be delivered almost instantly

Industrial Revolution Why do you think that Lowell would want to employ only single women, what would be the advantages? Why / How might the railroad and the telegraph work together? Make a list of all the inventions that we have discussed:
