WE ARE…. 1. Craft and Structure: In the first paragraph, what two images does the narrator juxtapose for contrast? What are the connotations of these juxtaposed images? In the first paragraph the narrator juxtapose for contrast the “arid, sterile dust” which has a negative and colorless connotation against the marigolds, described as “a brilliant splash of sunny yellow” which has a bright, hopeful connotation. In the first paragraph the two images the narrator chose to juxtapose are the “arid sterile dust” and the “brilliant splash of the sunny yellow” of the marigolds. The “dust” is dull and negative feeling while the marigolds are fun and positive feeling. Patriot Strong!

WE ARE…. 2. Craft and Structure: What is the meaning of amorphous in paragraph 4? In paragraph 4, amorphous means “vague, unclear,” describing the dim hope of a miracle that motivates the narrator and her community. Patriot Strong!

WE ARE…. 3. Craft and Structure: What do you learn about the narrator through the author’s use of flashback? Cite text evidence to support your answer. The use of flashback provides insight into how this evet influenced the narrator. “The years have taken me worlds away from that time and place…” The flashback in paragraph 2 reveals the narrator’s age, setting, and feelings. The use of flashback provides insight into how this evet influenced the narrator. In paragraph 62 we see the beginning of transformation in the narrator when she says, “Of course I could not express the things that I knew about Miss Lottie as I stood their awkward and ashamed.” Later in paragraph 63 she ends by saying “And I too have planted marigolds.” Her admittance to this fact shows the trasformative moment she experienced in that moment which caused her to plant marigolds as an adult. Patriot Strong!

WE ARE…. 4. Craft and structure: Notice that in paragraph 9, the narrator uses foreshadowing. What is the effect of this hinting at events to come? Highlight other hints or foreshadowing provided by the narrator. The narrator states that the day began her “end of innocence” which adds suspense and a foreboding tone to the story. The diction enhances this tone as she describes her “restlessness” and the sense of “something unknown and therefore terrifying” in paragraph 8. The imagery also implies that something beautiful will be destroyed: “like a fresh watercolor painting left out in the rain.” Patriot Strong!

WE ARE…. 5. Key ideas and details: Why are the marigolds so important to Miss Lottie, and why do the children hate them? The marigolds are important to Miss Lottie because they represent hope and beauty that is missing in poor, brokenness of her life and the lives others around her. The children can’t understand the need for beauty or hope as a way to break through the impoverished and ugly situation of their lives. The marigolds confuse them with false hope and anger them as a reminder of the beauty that seems beyond their reach. They can only see the cruelty of destroying them so that they fit better the surroundings, especially with Miss Lottie’s yard, house, and physical condition. Patriot Strong!

WE ARE…. 6. Key Ideas and Details: What can you infer from the text as to Lizabeth’s reasons for her final act of destruction? One can infer that Lizabeth’s reasons for her final act of destruction was due to her overwhelmed feelings of need, hopelessness, bewilderment, and fear due to the changes in her parents situations and roles and her new discoveries about the world that she could not fully understand. Patriot Strong!

WE ARE…. 7. Craft and structure: How does the author use juxtaposition to show how Lizabeth has changed through her experience? The author uses juxtaposition to show how Lizabeth has changed by describing her experience with Miss Lottie and the marigolds through the eyes of an adult who has compassion and understanding, no longer seeing her as a witch, but as a broken woman who nevertheless still fought to keep some beauty and dignity in her life. This mature view shows how Lizabeth has grown from her childish ways into a fully sophisticated woman. Patriot Strong!
