Physical Properties Vocabulary P.5.5A1 Matter Physical Properties Vocabulary P.5.5A1
IN What is made up of matter?
Physical Properties Characteristics that can be observed, using the five senses, without changing or trying to change the composition of a substance
Physical changes Change in which the form or appearance of matter changes, but not its composition
States of Matter A state of matter is one of the distinct forms in which matter can exist. Four states of matter are observable in everyday life: solid, liquid, gas, and plasma.
Boiling Point the temperature at which a liquid boils and turns to vapor.
Freezing point the temperature at which a liquid turns into a solid when cooled.
Conductivity the degree to which a specified material conducts electricity
Magnetic properties Magnetism is a property of matter and it occurs in different forms and degrees in various Earth materials that act as conductors and insulators. capable of being magnetized or attracted by a magnet.
Density how compact an object is density is the mass of an object divided by its volume
Qualitative Observation properties that are observed and can generally not be measured with a numerical result
Quantitative Observation observations are made with instruments such as rulers, balances, graduated cylinders, beakers, and thermometers results are measurable.
