 Why do you think scientists classify things into groups?  So they can identify them and know what they are talking about!  How many levels of classification.

Directions Today: Get out the “King Phillip” organizer…flip to the BACK “Notes: Domains & Kingdoms”

Fill this in on your organizer: Domain: BACTERIA ARCHAEA EUKARYA Kingdom(s): Eubacteria Archaebacteria Protista Fungi Plantae Animalia Now let’s take a few notes on each kingdom!

The 6 Kingdoms 1. Eubacteria- “new” bacteria. A The 6 Kingdoms 1. Eubacteria- “new” bacteria A. Prokaryotes (no nucleus) B. Have cell walls (help keep its shape) C. Unicellular (one-celled) D. Can be Autotroph (make own food) or Heterotroph (eat other food for energy) Examples- Streptococcus, Escherichia coli

2. Kingdom Archaebacteria- old “extreme” bacteria Prokaryotes Cell walls made of special material Unicellular Can be Autotroph or Heterotroph Examples- “Methanogens”-love methane gas “Halophiles”- love salt

3. Protista (Protists)- “junk drawer kingdom” A 3. Protista (Protists)- “junk drawer kingdom” A. Eukaryotic (cells have nucleus) B. Some have chloroplasts & cell walls of cellulose C. Unicellular or SIMPLE Multi-cellular D. Autotroph or heterotroph** (plant-like, animal-like, fungus-like) E. Examples-Ameoba, Kelp, Slime Mold

4. Kingdom Fungi. A. Eukaryote. B. cell walls made of chitin. C 4. Kingdom Fungi A. Eukaryote B. cell walls made of chitin C. Multicellular & Unicellular (yeast) D. Heterotroph- absorbs nutrients from environment/decaying organisms Examples- mushroom, yeast, Athlete’s foot

FUNGI

Plantae (Plants) A. Eukaryotes B Plantae (Plants) A. Eukaryotes B. Have chloroplasts & cell walls of made of cellulose C. Multicellular D. Autotroph- Photosynthesis Examples- mosses, ferns, flowering plants, trees

6. Kingdom Animalia (Animals). A. Eukaryote. B 6. Kingdom Animalia (Animals) A. Eukaryote B. No cell walls or chloroplasts/Only have cell membrane C. Multicellular D. Heterotroph Examples- Sponges, worms, insects, fish, mammals, HUMANS!!!
