KNOWLEDGEWEB Educational Area Coordinators: Enrico Motta / OU Wolfgang Nejdl / L3S Wolfgang Nejdl 24/04/19

Our Goals: Activities to Spread Excellence Different communities: Educational, industrial and research communities Different kinds of students: students, professionals, researchers Found an institution (VISWE) to support all communities in an integrated way Wolfgang Nejdl 24/04/19

Work Packages 3.1 Foundations for Virtual Institute for Semantic Web Education (VISWE) 3.2 Educational content and event provision – Course materials, educational events, summer schools, complete courses and training programmes 3.3 Semantic delivery platform – Development of a Semantic Platform for delivering/interacting with learning material about Semantic Web Wolfgang Nejdl 24/04/19

Participants Learning Lab Lower Saxony, University of Hanover (L3S) 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 The Open University, UK (OU) 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 University of Trento (UniTn) 3.1, 3.3 Freie Universität Berlin (FUB) 3.1, 3.2 Free University of Bozen – Bolzano (FUB) 3.1, 3.2 Informatics and Telematics Institute (CERTH) 3.1, 3,2 Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) 3.1, 3.2 University of Karlsruhe (UKARL) 3.1, 3.2 National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG) 3.1 Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) 3.1 Inst. National de Recherche en Informatique et en Automatique (INRIA) 3.2 University of Liverpool (LivUni) 3.2 University of Manchester (VUM) 3.2 University of Sheffield (USFD) 3.2 Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) 3.2 Wolfgang Nejdl 24/04/19

3.1 Virtual Institute for Semantic Web Education - VISWE Central focus of all educational activities within Knowledge Web Provides learning materials, services, and events to support knowledge acquisition Administrative unit for the organization of distance and face to face learning (courses, summer schools e.g.) Manage the infrastructure to store and access all kinds of educational material Wolfgang Nejdl 24/04/19

3.1 Virtual Institute for Semantic Web Education - VISWE Coordination and distribution of M.Sc and Ph.D. program in cooperation with several participating universities Training programs for industrial learners Face-to-face and distance learning offers Wolfgang Nejdl 24/04/19

3.1 VISWE Co-operation KnowledgeWeb and REWERSE REWERSE aims at developing and establishing rules and reasoning for the Semantic Web ("logic and rule layer" of the Semantic Web tower) Education and training in order to transfer technologies to the industry Special programmes for the training of young researchers, doctoral students, and young Information Technology professionals: initiate and run a yearly Spring or Summer School. develop and publish on the Web virtual courses. develop and run a Web-based doctoral programme. Education & Training (education with target group: university level education) Technology Transfer and Awareness (awareness events and education targeted to industry). Wolfgang Nejdl 24/04/19

3.1 First Tasks Conducting a detailed requirement analysis for VISWE Investigation of prior attempts IVIMEDS, BIT Legal implications/instruments Relation to Bologna Declaration for creating a ‚European higher education area‘ Lessons learnt from the first OntoWeb Summer School Negotiations among Universities Financial, copyright, personnel implications, mutual approval of courses credit points, memoranda of understanding Wolfgang Nejdl 24/04/19

3.1 Deliverables (first 18 month) D 3.1.1 Specification of VISWE tasks and goals (as result of a requirements analysis) D 3.1.2 Document on organizational structure and legal form of VISWE to which all participating partners have agreed D 3.1.3 Memorandum of Understanding signed by participating partners, regarding commitment to organizational structure and legal form of VISWE Wolfgang Nejdl 24/04/19

3.2 Content, Courses and Programs Goals: Provide a ready-to-use collection of learning materials Complete courses Tutorials Exercises ... Organize educational events Summer schools Training seminars for professionals Joint M.Sc. and Ph.D. university courses Long-Term: provide M.Sc. and Ph.D. programme Wolfgang Nejdl 24/04/19

3.2 First Tasks 1. Identification of core curricula Selection of required topics Agreement on curriculum (->VISWE) 2. Collection and organization of learning units Collection of available material (started) Adaptation of this material and creation of missing pieces Ordering and Provision in a LMS 3. Organization of learning events Summer school Professional training Wolfgang Nejdl 24/04/19

3.2 Ontology for Semantic Web domain Subsumes Ontoweb Portal Ontology/AKT – which can be regarded as community self-portrait Needs EML or similar for pedagogic roles, course components, courses, programmes etc. Needs new classes for subject matter (e.g., for knowledge modelling components such as ‘class’) Can serve as basis to describe Curricula Prerequisite for Semantic Learning Platform Must be built by the KnowledgeWeb/VISWE community Wolfgang Nejdl 24/04/19

3.2 Deliverables (first 18 Months) D 3.2.1 v1 Initial learning unit collection available D 3.2.2 Report on educational events D 3.2.3 Report on core curricula in Ontology and Semantic Web D 3.2.4 Agreement on M.Sc. curriculum by all participating universities D 3.2.5 MoU on curriculum and mutual course approval D 3.2.6 Summer school on semantic web technologies Wolfgang Nejdl 24/04/19

3.3 Semantic Delivery Platform Goals Setting up an infrastructure for learning material provision and distance learning Creation of a central access point for all learning units within KnowledgeWeb Usage of semantic technology enhance learning experience evaluate new approaches Forging links with other NoEs by using common approaches and/or sharing infrastructure Wolfgang Nejdl 24/04/19

3.3 First Tasks 1. Agreement on formats and metadata which formats are currently in use? which metadata is necessary for semantic extensions 2. Setup of a Learning Management System Requirements analysis and system selection Installation and administration of the selected platform 3. Provision of semantic extensions personalized knowledge management, document enrichment, services for knowledge sharing First focus on Semantic Browsing (based on Magpie by OU) 4. Collaboration with IMS Global Learning Consortium and NoE PROLEARN (lead by L3S) Wolfgang Nejdl 24/04/19

3.3 Why add extensions Knowledge Web is a Semantic Web oriented NoE We need showcases of what we can do The LMS+SW hybrid augments/provides an alternative for browsing, search, etc. LMS+SW is better since more focussed on resources retrieved using an ontology built by the community - i.e., using a community point of view Note that we will concentrate in the first 18 months on adding semantic browsing using KMi’s Magpie. Wolfgang Nejdl 24/04/19

3.3 Magpie Uses lexicon derived from domain ontology to identify and highlight textual elements in web pages which can be associated with classes Associates appropriate services with classes User accesses these from menu obtained by right clicking on highlighted class Can also push information (related class instances etc.) as user browses Keeps semantic log of user interactions (i.e., asserts to knowledge base) Wolfgang Nejdl 24/04/19

Current ontology classes (Results of) Learning service selected Wolfgang Nejdl 24/04/19

3.3 Extending VISWE’s LMS using Magpie Identify community/community requirements Build Ontology (and create metadata scheme, populate ontologies) Create/find tools for community construction of ontologies, learning objects, learning services Construct new learning services Wolfgang Nejdl 24/04/19

3.3 Deliverables (first 18 Months) D 3.3.1 Report on the agreed metadata standard for learning units D 3.3.2 v1 Basic infrastructure available D 3.3.3 Prototype of advanced learning platform D 3.3.4 Report on collaboration with IMS Consortium and PROLEARN Wolfgang Nejdl 24/04/19
