Parent Teacher Conferences October 11th. Additional days will be provided. Please be on the look out for links to sign up for parent teacher conferences. NEXT WEEKS NEWSLETTER! Sign up with your child’s math and reading teacher. You can always contact your child’s teacher to set up a conference

VOLUNTEER Fulton County’s policy for anyone volunteering anywhere within the school; classroom, Media Center, or on field trips is all volunteers must complete the Child Abuse Reporting Protocol for Volunteers slideshow. This must be done prior to you arriving at the school. The protocol only takes minutes but it can take up to 48 hours for your registration to be completely processed by Fulton County. Once you receive confirmation that the registration is complete, you will only then be able to volunteer at Roswell North.

Transportation We MUST have any changes in transportation in writing with parent signature. This is for the safety of your child! Do not email transportation changes. Please be specific on who is picking up your child. First and last names. Include how they usually go home.

Homework Math homework will be a few concept review sheets based on content recently covered in class or topics the students need to continue practicing. Homework will be given on a Monday and is due the Friday of the same week. Students can turn in the homework in at any point in the week when it is complete.

How Can I Help My Child with Math? Review addition/subtraction facts. Practice multiplication and division facts through 10. Show interest! Ask to see what your child is doing in class. Have them teach you what they’ve learned. Check homework!

Reading Use a balanced literacy approach. Shared Reading Guided Reading Groups Writer’s Workshop Word Work Small groups based on guided reading levels. Students rotate through different stations practicing various skills. Students become independent thinkers and workers

Reading/Language Arts *4th grade reading and language arts standards build upon the standards we focused on in 3rd grade. They continue to build on them in 5th grade as well. We are digging deeper into the standard each year, so the students grasp a better understanding as they advance. *Constructed Response- Students will be expected to provide a constructed response answer for some of their reading comprehension questions. Constructed response is answering the question by restating the question, answering it, providing evidence and elaboration, and proofreading the final answer.

Resources StoryWorks Magazine- This magazine provides interesting and creative stories, articles, plays, and paired texts for the students to read. It provides many activities to go with each text as well. Moby Max- Online resource that can be used for reading, language arts, and math. www.tweentribune.com- Provides current event articles with 4 different levels to meet the needs of all students. Novels- We use a variety of novels on the students’ specific levels. Some novels will be chosen by the student and some chosen by the teacher.

Why Units of Study? Children who leave school today without strong literacy skills will no longer find a job waiting for them! We must raise the rigor of our work with writers. Grade specific and CC/GSE aligned

The Pathway Along Which Young Writers Progress Learner needs to do the bulk of the work. Think of what a personal trainer does for a client. Should they be doing the practice? The learner needs to write, and write A LOT. It is the teachers job to move each individual toward more and more proficiency. Teaching writing is not about waiting for children to grow on their own. It is about knowing Where a child is in a learning progression, and what comes next Taking them through the gradual release of responsibility model, with feedback along the way

Bottom Lines For Effective Writing Instruction Writers must write EVERYDAY Volume Matters The teacher is the facilitator, not the fixer Messy should be the assumption Writers need an audience Engagement matters Writers need to cycle through the process

Homework-Reading and Language Arts Read! Read! Read!-Read a minimum of 20 minutes a night. We would prefer more! One novel a month One written book review. Moby Max-40 minutes a week. Assigned as needed by the individual needs of each class.
