The American colonies declared their independence in 1776, but King of England did not want to give the colonies freedom.

In 1781 the colonies won the war.

The new country needed a government.

Representatives from the new 13 thirteen states had a meeting. This meeting was called the Constitutional Convention.

These papers supported the Constitution. The Federalist Papers were written by James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay. These papers supported the Constitution.

In 1787, the representatives wrote a the Constitution In 1787, the representatives wrote a the Constitution. The Constitution set up the government.

The Constitution is the Supreme Law of the Land.

The first words of the United States Constitution are We the People . . . . “We the People” means that the US would be self-governed. This means the citizens would decide the laws.
