MEIOSIS (textbook section 3.1 pg 74).  Sexual reproduction produces offspring that is genetically similar, but different from the parents. This is accomplished.
Topic: Reproduction Aim: Explain the processes of sexual reproduction and meiosis. Do Now: Phases of Mitosis Worksheet HW: Read pages Write a.
Mitosis vs. Meiosis. What is the difference Mitosis is asexual reproduction. Does not produce a new organism. Mitosis is asexual reproduction. Does not.
Meiosis Cell division process whereby the number of chromosomes in a diploid cell is reduced by half through the separation of homologous chromosomes.
EQ: What are the major differences between Meiosis and Mitosis?

Asexual Reproduction vs. Sexual Reproduction Asexual Reproduction – Diploid cells give rise to identical diploid cells – DNA comes from one parent cell.
Meiosis: Creation of the Sex Cells. What is Meiosis?? Meiosis- creation of sex cells (eggs, sperm) Meiosis- creation of sex cells (eggs, sperm) Occurs.
Chapter 11-4 Meiosis. Let’s make a sex cell! Meiosis – Production of haploid gametes Meiosis – Production of haploid gametes Diploid- has paired chromosomes.
Meiosis Cell division – ‘ reduction division’ Production of sex cells – gametes.
Aim: How do organisms reproduce? Who thinks they can define Reproduction? The process by which living things produce other living things like themselves.
SECTION 6.1 CHROMOSOMES AND MEIOSIS. YOU HAVE BODY CELLS AND GAMETES  Somatic Cells  Definition: body cells; make up most of your body tissues and organs;
There are 2 main types of cells in your body:
Reproduction (to make sure a species can continue)
Aim # 52: How do organisms reproduce?
MEIOSIS Creating gametes (sex cells).
Sexual vs. Asexual Reproductions
Mitosis The parent cell splits to produce two IDENTICAL daughter cells… each with the same number of chromosomes as the parent (46 chromosomes in humans)

Asexual vs. sexual reproduction
Mom Dad Human body cells have 23 pairs of chromosomes and 46 total Each pair of chromosomes is called Homologous pairs and have copies of the same genes.

Two Types of Reproduction

Asexual Reproduction used by some plant and invertebrate species requires 1 parent offspring are genetically identical to the parent uses body cells

Body Cells called somatic cells (somato- means “body”) body cells are diploid = contain 2 sets (pairs) of chromosomes (diplo- means “double”) made by the process of mitosis throughout the entire body

Steps of Asexual Reproduction Body cells are made by mitosis

Steps of Asexual Reproduction The organism undergoes binary fission, budding or regeneration to create an offspring

Sexual Reproduction used by most species requires 2 parents offspring are genetically different from the parents uses sex cells

Sex Cells called gametes = egg and sperm cells (gamo- means “sex cell”) sex cells are haploid = contain 1 set (single) of chromosomes (haplo- means “single”) made by the process of meiosis inside reproductive organs

Steps of Sexual Reproduction Sex cells are made by meiosis (like “double mitosis”) Cells divide twice

Steps of Sexual Reproduction Male & female sex cells come together to form one body cell (called a zygote) Cell from mom Cell from dad zygote

Steps of Sexual Reproduction The zygote undergoes mitosis repeatedly until it develops into a complete organism Etc…
