Rehabilitation of a Contract Killer: Caspase-3 Directs Stem Cell Differentiation  Mohammad Abdul-Ghani, Lynn A. Megeney  Cell Stem Cell  Volume 2, Issue 6, Pages 515-516 (June 2008) DOI: 10.1016/j.stem.2008.05.013 Copyright © 2008 Elsevier Inc. Terms and Conditions

Figure 1 Caspase Regulation of Cell-Fate Decisions (A) Caspase activation (green arrows) induces stem cell self-renewal, cell differentiation, or cell death (apoptosis). The specific outcome may depend on the extent and/or kinetics of caspase activation. (B) Fujita et al. (2008) and Janzen et al. (2008) postulate that caspase-3 indirectly promotes stem cell differentiation by limiting self-renewal of the stem cell pool, hence favoring differentiation. Other, largely unidentified, factors (depicted with blue arrows) are also likely to participate. Alternatively, caspase-3 may influence differentiation more directly, by actively engaging factors that promote the gene expression and phenotype of a differentiated cell type, in addition to limiting self-renewal.
