Moments Y9

Aims Know that forces can cause objects to turn on a pivot and understand the principle of moments.

Explore Find and record the balance positions for 2 100g masses. 3 values. Find and record the balance positions for 1 100g masses and one 50g mass. 3 values Left hand side Right hand side Mass/g Distance from pivot /cm

Explain What do you notice about the left hand side and right hand side? Try this multiply the mass by the distance?

Moments The moment of a force is the force (in Newtons) x The distance (m or cm) The units are ??????? Nm or Ncm

The principle of moments A system is in equilibrium (balanced) when the clockwise moments (right hand side) equal the anticlockwise moments (left hand side)

Extend Predict an arrangement of three 100g masses that will be in equilibrium. Test your prediction

Evaluation Levers worksheet Text book p192 q 4-7 Homework – Moments worksheet

Progress Can you…. Identify pivot (fulcrum), effort and load for levers? Calculate a moment and give the correct units? Use the principle of moments to calculate an unknown value?
