Speed of a Transverse Wave Prof. Marlon Flores Sacedon Department of Mathematics and Physics College of Arts and Sciences Visayas State University, Visca Baybay City, Leyte, Phiippines

Speed of a Transverse Wave Speed of transverse waves 𝒗 on a string are determined the tension 𝑭 in the string and its mass per unit length 𝝁 (also called linear mass density).

Speed of a Transverse Wave Increasing the tension also increases the restoring forces that tend to straighten the string when it is disturbed, thus increasing the wave speed.

Speed of a Transverse Wave Increasing the mass per unit length makes the motion more sluggish, and so decreases the wave speed.

Speed of a Transverse Wave The exact relationship among wave speed 𝑣, tension 𝐹, and mass per unit length 𝜇. 𝒗= 𝑭 𝝁

Speed of a Transverse Wave Derivation Similar to the right triangle

Speed of a Transverse Wave Derivation

Problems There are (80.0 m/44.3 m) = 1.81 wavelengths (that is, cycles of the wave) in the rope.
