Place Features

Place Map--Human

Physical Place Map (Site – identifies a place by its unique physical characteristics).

Location Two Types: Absolute (Mathematical) •An exact position on the Earth’s surface Relative (Situation) •A position that is in relation to another position

Absolute Location (Mathematical) Can be described as Latitude and Longitude Example: 38º 50’ N, 77º 00’ W •Can be described as an address. Example: 6100 Rolling Road

Absolute Location Maps Virginia Springfield

Relative Location (Situation) Can be described with distances, time, or directions. Location of place relative to other objects.

Relative Location Map

Latitude and Longitude Finding absolute locations and places on a map or globe

Latitude Definition: Imaginary lines that run east and west, but measure distances north and south of the Equator. The Equator is designated at 0º Latitude Also can be called parallels, and run from 0º to 90º North or South. Latitude is always given first.

Longitude Definition: Imaginary lines that run north and south, but measure distances east and west of the Prime Meridian. The Prime Meridian is designated as 0º Longitude and runs through the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England. Also can be called meridians, and run from 0º to 180º East or West.

Time Telling time from longitude 15 degrees east is 1 hour forward 15 degrees west is 1 hour backward Earth is divided into 24 standard time zones. 1 hour= 15 degrees Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)/Universal Time (UT) – 1884 agreement that set time at the prime meridian. International Date Line – follows 180 degree longitude for the most part East of IDL back 24 hours West of IDL forward 24 hours
