Closing Gaps in ICT and Related Technologies for Agriculture Inaugural High Level Panel Conference on Agriculture Research in Kenya 13-14th September 2018 Kiringai Kamau Executive Director CANIS/UoN & P4ACAD Africa Godan exists to respond to particular challenges and foster innovations to meet them

Evidence Based Decision Making ICPA says that evidence-based decision-making “helps people make well informed decisions” Evidence based DM emerges from policies, programs, and projects; when they employ evidence from research at the heart of policy development and implementation. Godan exists to respond to particular challenges and foster innovations to meet them

Evidence-based DM in Policy Practice The core that binds the SDGs, Africa Agenda 2063, CAADP/ Malabo is evidence based DM How is the Evidence Collected, Stored, Analyzed and Shared for Decision making/Innovation? Who is responsible for its curation and dissemination? Godan exists to respond to particular challenges and foster innovations to meet them

Collecting the Evidence/Data There is rapid development in data collection and dissemination technologies Technologies used to collect data: Geo positioning Broad-band mobile comms Sensor platforms/IoT Spatial search Pervasive computing Godan exists to respond to particular challenges and foster innovations to meet them

From Data to Decision Making Transforming raw data to information and then into useful intelligence calls for cooperative involvement of multi-disciplinary scientists Godan exists to respond to particular challenges and foster innovations to meet them

Data Driven Innovation Transformation calls for accessibility of data It is critical to have Data Openness in whatever form The Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition (GODAN) promotes data openness, SD MoAI hosts GODAN Godan exists to respond to particular challenges and foster innovations to meet them

Initiatives of interest https://www.opendatacube.org/about https://www.opendatacube.org/about Africa Regional Data Cube Launched at a high-level event in Nairobi (https://www.opendatacube.org/about) A new tool to harness the latest Earth Observation and Satellite Technology Focus food security, agriculture, deforestation, and water access Godan exists to respond to particular challenges and foster innovations to meet them

Data Thinking and Us… Is our time spent planning, strategizing, then collecting data with very little time executing? Would collecting Data/Evidence be easier with technologies? Do we have the people, technology and resources for execution? What can we do? Godan exists to respond to particular challenges and foster innovations to meet them

We Need A Game Changer… The SLAE! African Agriculture is Currently Top Down….No data, no evidence! We Need A Game Changer… The SLAE! Without Knowledge Driven Extension: with No data-Information Asymmetry rules … Chaos thrive! Human resources to offer extension is a challenge! Students lack experiential learning… Can we help? No agribusinesses for students attachment! Universities, Research and County Government Linkages overwhelmed! National Government and Development Partners cannot reach the ground!
