Autumn budget The largest ever strategic roads investment package worth £28.8 billion with £3.5 billion available 2020-2025 with £3.5 billion of this for the Major Road Network (MRN) An extra £420 million for local roads maintenance in 2018-19 to tackle the growing number of potholes, repair damages and invest in keeping bridges open and safe and additionally, it makes £150 million available for small road improvement projects such as roundabouts. No long term investment plan for the maintenance of local roads !

Parliamentary transport Select Committee inquiry into the funding and governance of local road maintenance Joint letter 3 key messages That local authorities should not be forced into a trade-off between funding local roads and other vital services such as adult social care or children’s services That the scale of the problem is not fully understood, nor the full benefits that the local highway network brings, There needs to be a proper consideration of how we fund our local highway network for long term sustainability
