UAE National Agenda – TIMSS, PIRLS, PISA TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) ) – formal classroom mathematics and science in terms of content. Students in Grade 4 and Grade 8 take the tests – every 4 years PIRLS (Progress of International Reading and Literacy Study – construct, extend and reflect on the meaning of what has been read – students in Grade 4 are tested every 5 years PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) is about application of (mathematics/science/reading) knowledge to the real world - not directly linked to the school curriculum based around problem solving and thinking – 3 year cycle - students tested are 15 years of age – end of compulsory education Once tested, KHDA set targets for schools in Dubai PISA World’s biggest international survey – schools in 65 countries In 2006 – focus on scientific literacy, 2009 – reading and 2012 mathematical literacy

PISA – Citizens of the World PISA asks the following questions to establish the extent to which education prepares students to be active, reflective, intelligent citizens: Are students well prepared for future challenges? Can they analyse, reason and communicate effectively? How well do they transfer ideas and solve problems? Do they have the capacity to continue learning throughout life? Drive improvement of learner outcomes, potential life chances and policy development for governments Shanghai has the highest performing scores in mathematics with a mean score of 613 – 119 points above the OECD average in 2012 (494) and 119 is equivalent to three years of schooling A more socio-economically advantaged student score 39 points higher in mathematics – equivalent to one year of schooling

PISA Students’ Engagement, Drive and Self Beliefs - Findings Lack of punctuality and truancy are negatively associated with student performance Arriving late for school is associated with a 27 point lower score in Maths Missing classes or days of school is associated with a 37 point lower score in Maths This is the equivalent to nearly one year of schooling Good teacher-student relations are strongly associated with greater student engagement Self belief in mathematics can significantly affect performance Motivation, drive and confidence in oneself are essential if students are to fulfill their potential
