Mindset #44 Who assassinated President Lincoln? How many days after the end of the Civil War was he assassinated? Was there a conspiracy to kill others as well? Who? Why?

Mindset #43 What was the Emancipation Proclamation? Why was General Grant important to the Union victory? Explain Sherman’s March to the Sea. What were the three terms of surrender that Lee and Grant agreed on?

President Lincoln Lincoln was reelected in 1864. His main goal was to preserve the Union. Unfortunately, he never got to carry out this plan. On April 14, 1865, five days after the South surrendered, Lincoln was assassinated. John Wilkes Booth, a Confederate supporter, shot him. The assassination was part of a conspiracy in an effort to rally the remaining Confederate troops to continue fighting. The conspiracy also called for the murder of Secretary of State William Seward and Vice President Andrew Johnson.

Conspirators Lewis Powell (attempted murder of Seward) Mary Surratt (contributing to the conspiracy??? – first woman executed by U.S. government) George Atzerodt (conspiring to kill VP Johnson)

“The Hunt for John Wilkes Booth” Video that tells the story behind the conspiracy to decapitate the government by assassinating Lincoln, and the manhunt that ensued. Answer as many questions as possible. No ipods, talking, putting your head down etc.
