Graduation Requirements Misconceptions Foreign language is NOT required to graduate but it is required for Bright Futures and to enter most 4-year universities Community service hours are NOT required for graduation but are required for the Bright Futures Academic Scholarship(75 hours)
Graduation Diploma Awards Awards honoring outsanding GPA’s. D’s and F’s must be made up through FLVS and replaced with at least a C. Silver Cord-150 hours of community service. 50 must be done senior year. See Maryann Cosenza for approved agencies. Must be non-profit
FCAT FCAT Reading/Math Retakes For juniors who did not pass in 10th grade Offered twice per year Next administration: March 30th & 31st A concordant SAT or ACT score can substitute the FCAT graduation requirement. Register now for second semester.
Course Challenges Steps if your child is struggling in a class 1. Check your FOCUS account 2. Contact the teacher, preferably via email Email addresses found on school website. Same format used for all staff. First_Last@ccps.k12.fl.us 3. If tutoring is needed, attend tutoring Mon-Wed after school in room A100. Free! 4. If necessary, contact Mrs. Matthews to set up a parent-teacher conference. Meetings occur at 6:45am
Credit Retrieval Florida Virtual School(FLVS)-pace is 9-18 weeks/semester. Free and done only at home. Highest grade available is an “A”. Must keep up with the pace. Ed Options(Night School)- Next session is the first week of January. Lasts 7 weeks, one day/week after school from 2-4pm. Highest grade one can earn is a “C.” Research-Available senior year during school. Uses same program as Ed Options but is done during the school day.
Senior Year Schedule Registration occurs the first half of the 2nd sem 7 classes total Example of a strong senior schedule English Government/Economics Math Science 3 electives. Possibly a foreign language or an elective that matches a career choice. On the Job Training(OJT) is available
College Credit Advanced Placement High School courses taught at college level. Test score determines eligibility for college credit. To be eligible, students must show success in previous academics Dual Credit College classes taught at PCHS. Can earn college credit with at least a “C.” Beginning of college GPA! Must have a qualifying test score(CPT, ACT or SAT) and have a 3.0 unweighted cumulative GPA
Bright Futures Scholarship Visit www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org for a complete listing of requirements 3 different scholarships, each with different criteria The two main scholarships(Academic and Medallion) only look at academic classes and foreign language. The Gold Seal will calculate Charlotte Tech Center coursework Florida schools only
Junior “To Do” List Maintain good grades and attendance Think about course requests for senior year. Increase rigor, if possible. Honors, AP and Dual Credit courses are available Register for the SAT & ACT Start/Continue researching possible colleges and majors. Many college application deadlines are November 2011 Tour colleges! This is a MUST.
